Named Spanish-American War Tunic – Quackenbush

Exceptional Named Spanish-American War Tunic. Presents in excellent, all original condition – considering the age and service of the piece. Condition issues are as follows: some discoloration/staining exists on the tunic, rough spot on left breast of tunic, minor wear on inner neck, left epaulette button is missing, third button down on left side of tunic is missing, and one belt loop and button missing from rear/side of tunic. Despite the aforementioned imperfections, the tunic is in solid shape on the whole and displays beautifully. Tunic has nice coloring on blue cotton accents, including the sets of corporal stripes on both sleeves. All buttons show the raised emblem of the 22nd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Tunic has tag on the inside neck – “Broadway”. Below this tag is written the name “R.C. Quackenbush Oct/88“.

According to our cursory research, Robert C. Quackenbush (born 1864 in New York City) was mustered into Company B of the 22nd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment in May of 1898 as a sergeant. We believe that he had prior service with the 22nd New York Infantry regiment prior to his muster in with the 22nd Volunteers, thus accounting for variation in rank as presented on this tunic.

A rare example of a Spanish-American War era tunic, made even more unique due to its identification. Truly a special artifact and an opportunity not to be missed.
